20 million

Single-use plastic items displaced through its solutions

The Beginning

What began as a question about the environmental impact of single-use plastics in 2019 eventually became the foundation of BioReform. Mohammed Azhar Mohiuddin, the company's Founder and CEO, recognised that while businesses were increasingly aware of the need to move away from conventional plastics, finding alternatives that were equally functional, affordable and reliable remained a challenge.

Determined to bridge this gap, Azhar founded BioReform in India in 2021 while still a student. His vision was to develop practical packaging alternatives that would allow businesses to make more responsible material choices without compromising their operations.

Turning the idea into a functioning business was far from straightforward. With limited manufacturing experience and resources, the young founders had to navigate everything from sourcing machinery and establishing production facilities to finding suppliers, building a team and attracting customers. Financial pressures and operational setbacks added to the challenges, but each experience became an opportunity to learn and adapt.

These early lessons shaped BioReform's business philosophy: sustainability solutions must not only deliver environmental benefits but also make commercial sense. This understanding would eventually influence how the company designed its products, engaged customers and approached new markets.

“What began as a student-led idea has grown into a business with international ambitions. Every challenge has taught us something, and every milestone brings us closer to making responsible packaging more accessible.”

Success Story

From manufacturing everyday carry bags, BioReform has expanded into flexible packaging solutions for businesses across retail, food service, hospitality and related sectors. Combining its own biopolymer formulation with in-house manufacturing capabilities, the company helps businesses adopt more responsible packaging alternatives that meet their operational and commercial needs.

One of its biggest achievements has been the reported displacement of more than 20 million single-use plastic items through its solutions. Alongside this environmental milestone, BioReform has strengthened its manufacturing capabilities, expanded its product applications and grown from a student startup into a business pursuing international opportunities.

A major step in this journey came when BioReform was selected for Season 1 of the India-UAE CEPA Council Startup Series and RAKEZ's soft-landing programme. This opened the door to the UAE market, allowing the founders to explore Ras Al Khaimah's business ecosystem and assess its potential as a regional base.

RAKEZ supported the company throughout this journey, from introducing the founders to established businesses in the emirate and helping them understand the local market to guiding them through incorporation and administrative procedures. This hands-on assistance led to the successful establishment of BioReform FZ LLC in Ras Al Khaimah, providing a foundation for its regional growth.

With an established UAE presence, a growing portfolio of packaging solutions and a clear focus on practical sustainability, BioReform is now positioned to explore opportunities across the wider Gulf region.

The Future

With an established presence in India and the UAE, BioReform is now looking to strengthen its position as a sustainability transition partner across the wider Gulf region. Its priorities include developing regional customer relationships, exploring new packaging applications and working with businesses and research institutions to advance more resource-efficient materials.

A key ambition is to explore the establishment of a production facility in Ras Al Khaimah, which could bring manufacturing closer to regional customers, improve supply-chain responsiveness and support the wider adoption of responsible packaging alternatives. The potential investment remains subject to market demand, commercial feasibility and suitable partnerships.

The company is also exploring opportunities to use agricultural residues and other underutilised resources in developing future material solutions, with a focus on combining innovation, responsible production and practical business applications.

Looking further ahead, BioReform aims to displace at least 250 million additional single-use plastic items and support more than 50 major business transitions towards alternative packaging.
